Van der Windt Now Offers Sustainable Packaging for Potatoes

Van der Windt Verpakking has introduced a new type of sustainable packaging called CartoPaper for potatoes, onions and other agricultural products.

According to the company, the wrapping is made of high-quality paper which enables the packaged products to remain in excellent condition, which means less waste. A further reduction of waste is achieved because the bags are made from renewable raw materials and can be completely recycled after use.

The specially-developed paper is said to have wet-strength. This means it does not disintegrate or tear when saturated with water. Additionally, paper is by nature a material that “breathes”, but does not led light through. The new packaging options was developed in order to stimulate recycling. The bags are FSC certificated and are made 100% renewable raw materials. As spot-coating enables the paper to be sealed the share of this material is so low (<5%) that it dissolves during the paper recycling process.

The bags have a filled weight maximum of 2.5kg and are suitable for use on fully automatic horizontal and vertical form-fill seal machines. Adapting the machine so it can process both plastic and CartoPaper is relatively simple.
