Europe meets in Bucharest to boost organic farming in Romania

IFOAM-EU, the institution promoting organic agriculture in the European Union, and Bio Romania have organized in Bucharest, for the first time togehter, the "Central and Eastern European Organic Forum".
Since 2009, the "Romanian Organic Forum" was conceived as a platform of debate for promoting organic farming, both in Romania and region-wide, in the context of EU Regulations.
In an academic surrounding, Avraham Marian Cioceanu, President of Bio Romania, kicked off the discussions alongside the other fellow speakers and participants at the event. Highly appreciated speakers from all over Europe attended the event to talk about the possiblities and chances of boosting organic farming in Romania.
Specialists in organic farming from Austria, Germany, Bulgaria, Czech Republic and Estonia discussed with the country's national specialists about the economical chances and sustainable revenues in Romanian agriculture.
"The growth of the demand of the market is larger than the growth of production of organic food. This is a huge potential which should be considered as the future sustainable and stable income of organic agriculture. In some European countries about 20% of the farmers decided to go their way to produce following the rules of organic production. In Romania we estimate that at the moment only about 3% of the farmers produce "organic", what means, that there is a lot of growth for the Romanian agriculture" said Thomas Fertl, the Vicepresident of IFOAM-EU.
He continued stating that "The fact that the average prices of organic produced products is higher and more stable should convince a lot more producers. Besides a sustainable rural development, support from the European Union, organic production needs also research and development and reliable political commitment."
