LEAF marque farmers win national awards

LEAF (Linking Environment And Farming) is celebrating after two of its members were named winners at the 2015 National Trust Fine Farm Produce Awards.

LEAF Marque certified Trehill Farm, in Pembrokeshire, which is farmed by Peter and Gina Smithies, received a National Trust Fine Farm Produce award for their Belena, Lady Christl, and Madeleine potatoes and were also named as winners of the Special Producer of the Decade Award. They have been members of LEAF since 2006 and were amongst the first potato growers in the UK to become LEAF Marque certified.

Warren Farms in Worcestershire, also LEAF Marque certified and farmed by James and Victoria Hawkins, took the top spot in the regional category for their Pure Herefordshire Cold Pressed Rapeseed Oil.

Jeremy Boxall, LEAF Marque Director comments: “We are incredibly proud that LEAF Marque farmers have been named winners in three of the top categories at the prestigious National Trust Fine Farm Produce Awards this year. This well-deserved recognition highlights their commitment to growing food sustainably, to high standards of environmental care, through LEAF’s Integrated Farm Management. We would like to extend our congratulations to bothwinners.”

The LEAF Marque is an environmental assurance system recognising sustainably farmed products. It demonstrates that food has been produced by farmers who care for the environment. LEAF Marque produce can be found in supermarkets, farm shops and farmers’ markets nationwide.

Marking its 10th anniversary this year, the National Trust Fine Farm Produce Awards celebrate produce from the National Trust’s 1,500 tenant farmers and estates across England, Wales and Northern Ireland. Winners were decided by a judging panel consisting of 12 food and drink experts, including representatives from the Selfridges food team.
