U.S. Potatoes Held in Storage Accounted for 14% of 2023 Production

On a nationwide level, the major potato U.S. states kept 3.05m tons of potatoes in storage on June 1, 2023, a 3% decrease from June 1, 2022. Potatoes in storage accounted for 14% of 2023 production, nearly unchanged from the previous year.

The indicated season-to-date disappearance was 18.9m tons, a 4% decrease from the same period the previous year. Season-to-date decline and loss were 1.20m tons, a 1% decrease from the same period the previous year.

Potato stocks in Idaho on June 1, 2023, totaled 1.06m tons. The disappearance of the Idaho crop to date was 5.69m tons. On June 1 potato stocks in Oregon totaled 156,800. Disappearance to date was 1.23 m tons.

In Washington, on June 1 potato stocks totaled 728,000 tons. Disappearance to date totaled 4.33m tons.

Processors in Idaho used 3.47m tons cwt of potatoes for the season. Malheur County, Oregon used 474,320 potatoes for the season. The combined Idaho and Malheur County, Oregon usage was down 2% from June 1, 2022. In Washington, 3.03m tons of potatoes had been used by processors for the season. In the other parts of Oregon, 26.0 million cwt of potatoes had been processed. The combined Washington and other Oregon usage was down 6% from the previous year. Processors in the 8 States used 10.4m tons of potatoes for the season, down 4% from June 2022.
