More Stable European Potato Markets

More Stable European Potato Markets

According to the September 27 IFA executive summary report, the potato markets have been more stable in European nations and prices have remained at current levels.

Spud storage in the UK is “two weeks later than last year” and has just begun. The western part of the country has experienced continuous rain. This week, taters lifting has been prohibited in some places.

“Prices were under some pressure, however, this week there are signs of more stability as more growers move over to storage and there have been fewer supplies offered because of the wet soil conditions,” the document shows.

Home potato consumption and retail sales in Ireland are constant, with some rising demand. A small amount of new season produce is starting to reach the market, but exceedingly difficult harvesting conditions will result from this week's stormy conditions.

“So far it is reported that numbers under plants are low but size is quite good. It is reported that some Markies have been exported to the Canary Islands where there is high demand for stock this year,” the document also reveals.
