Burts Makes GBP6m Investment in Leicester Factory

To meet demand, Burts doubled the amount of hand-cooked chips that could be produced at its Leicester facility this year by investing GBP6m. The financial commitment made by Burts, which is well-known for its high-end goods, fits in with the business's organic and strategic growth plan and gives its staff members new chances and paths for advancement.

The investment includes modernizing handling procedures, tripling the capacity for storing potatoes, and installing two new, cutting-edge fryers and a new bagging system. 16 new positions for fryers and poppers have been established at the Leicester location as a result of these enhancements to the business.

The premium snacks brand was acquired by leading European snack producer, Europe Snacks earlier this year to expand its product portfolio to include more delectable snacking options and foster innovation to better serve current customers and spur growth. From its two manufacturing locations in Devon, Plymouth, and Leicester, Burts is still in business.

“It’s an exciting time for the business, and the investment means we’re able to double our capacity at our Leicester site to keep up with the demand for our products. The improvement this will have on our manufacturing capabilities will allow us to continue to grow and innovate at a time where we want to continue building the momentum in the snacking category,” Dave McNulty, managing director at Burts, said.

In addition to the upgrades to its Leicester facility, Burts is working to expand the scope of its sustainability initiative by lowering the amount of packaging it uses in the UK, obtaining electricity from a solar farm in Devon, and sourcing all of its potatoes from within 85 miles of its Plymouth headquarters.

“We know that there is still a long way to go in terms of sustainability for the business, but we are confident these changes are a step in the right direction for the business and the planet, without compromising on our great tasting hand-cooked snacks,” McNulty summed up.
