KP Snacks Launches Recycling Scheme for Chips and Other Snacks

KP Snacks recently announced that it has partnered up with recyclers TerraCycle to launch a recycling scheme for chips, popcorn, nuts and pretzels packs called pacKPromise in the UK.

KP Snacks is now initiating the first phase of the program, which is free to use. All recycled material will be ultimately be turned into new plastic items such as outdoor furniture, plastic lumber, waste bins or storage boxes.

“We are delighted to launch this new this new recycle scheme with TerraCycle, which for the first time will allow not only chips packets, but also nuts, popcorn and pretzels packs to be recycled. This initiative is just one part of our pacKPromise, a three-stage plan to reduce our packaging impact,” said Mark Thorpe, CEO of KP Snacks.

The scheme works like this: interested parties need to visit www.terracycle.co.uk/kpsnacks to sign up for the program and register their collection point. Once registered, KP Snacks will send participants a collection bin.

When the bin is full, the collection point administrator can download a free shipping label from www.terracycle.co.uk The packets are then to be sent to TerraCycle, which will clean and shred them ready to be made into small plastic pellets and then be used to make every day items.

Participants are encouraged to collect as many packs as they can in one go and then send in large batches. The scheme offers charity points for shipments over 2kg in weight (approximately 600 packs).

“Phase one of KP’s pacKPromise is to use less packaging. We have invested significantly in our Hula Hoops factory and are now using 23% less packaging in our Hula Hoops multipacks. Phase Two is to provide a short-term recycling solution, which we are doing with the launch of this new program with TerraCycle. Phase Three is for our plastic packaging to be fully recyclable by 2025 as part of our membership of the UK Plastics Pact,” further explained Thorpe.
