Kellanova Set to Achieve 90% Renewable Electricity Across North America in 2024

The manufacturer of Pringles, Kellanova, recently said that it is on course to fulfill its objective of building a future that is climate-positive, which includes reaching 100% renewable power in all of its manufacturing sites worldwide by the end of 2030. Kellanova's Better Days Promise includes this advancement.

“[…] We are proud to share that our Kellanova-owned North America manufacturing operations will achieve 90% renewable electricity by the end of 2024 through a previously signed virtual power purchase agreement (VPPA),” according to a recent press release.

The business agreed to a long-term wind energy VPPA in North America in 2021 in exchange for about 360-gigawatt hours of power produced each year from wind energy. Situated in north central Texas, the wind farm contributes renewable energy resources to the local grid, matching 90% of the total power consumed across Kellanova's North American production sites.

“Today's announcement is a big step toward achieving our Better Days Promise goal of 100% renewable electricity across our global manufacturing facilities by the end of 2030. As a global food company, we have a significant role to play in helping to reduce reliance on limited energy sources across our value chain and creating a positive impact for people and the planet,” Janelle Meyers, chief sustainability officer, of Kellanova, mentioned.

Through a range of initiatives, including on-site, VPPAs, and renewable energy certificates (RECs), Kellanova hopes to attain 100% renewable electricity throughout its owned production sites globally by the end of 2030. The company has made great strides toward this goal.

More precisely, by purchasing RECs, Kellanova's production plants in Europe have just achieved 100% renewable power for its operations. Since 2016, RECs have been purchased by Kellanova's production plants located in Europe. Furthermore, the business is also in the initial phases of a study program partnering with the United Kingdom government to determine the viability of using green hydrogen for Kellanova manufacturing sites in the nation as an alternative to natural gas.

Kellanova has increased the percentage of renewable power in its Asia, Middle East, and Africa area from 1% in 2018 to 33% in 2023 by implementing several strategies, including the installation of solar panels at our owned facilities in South Africa, Malaysia, Thailand, India, and South Africa.

The Kellanova plant in Colombia uses hydroelectric power as its only renewable energy source for electricity in Latin America.

In compliance with the Greenhouse Gas Protocol, Kellanova measures greenhouse gas emissions and renewable power. In its 2025 social and environmental report, the corporation will provide an update on how its Better Days Promise obligations have been met as of 2024.

The production activities of Kellanova North America are located in the United States, Canada, and one plant in Mexico.
