IFA: The Potato Trade Continues to be Affected

In its first report for the current year, experts from the Irish Farmers Association (IFA) announced that across Europe, potato traders are reporting ‘intense disappointment’ following the recent resurgence of COVID-19.

“Trade continues to be affected with various lockdown measures imposed in different member states. In the UK, the movement of Maris Piper potatoes has not been brisk but quality samples are starting to command a premium. Buyers of Maris Piper have been looking for quality,” they added.

Input Costs, a ‘Huge Concern’ for the Spud Farmers

Input costs for the upcoming season continue to be a huge concern for the spud farmers, IFA analysts admitted.

“Input costs for 2021 had already increased significantly but the signs for 2022 are hugely concerning,” they also mentioned.

Retail demand was vigorous over the Christmas period and continues to be ‘steady’ as we set into what would be a typically quieter time of year. There was continued turmoil for the foodservice sector over the festive season as restaurants were forced to shut at 8 pm. The pandemic scenario continues to cause market trade as we begin the new year.
