Heartland Potato Chips Records High Demand in Snacks

Heartland Potato Chips, in Washdyke, New Zealand, will likely have to introduce double shifts to cope with its growing range of products, after the family business has installed new equipment and just launched a range of premium crafted kettle chips in four flavors.

This adds to the firm's six-flavor wave cut range, produced since the factory started in 2010, and its flat cut category introduced in 2015. The rollout of a new line of chips may lead to more staff to meet demand at a Timaru chip factory.

The general manager, Charlotte Bowan, said kettle chips were popular and something they had been thinking about making for a while, but the two lines of products cannot work in tandem without investment in further equipment.

Heartland Potato Chips, which employs 16 people, may need eight more workers. A double shift would increase output from 1500 cartons to 3000 cartons, containing 12 packets of 150gm each.

The company supplies Progressive Enterprises and Foodstuffs supermarkets throughout New Zealand, and exports to Singapore and Brisbane in Australia.
