A Larger Caliber of Patata Nueva de Malaga on the Spanish Shelves

The Patata Nueva de Malaga, the first Spanish large-caliber cultivar of the season, has been brought back to the supermarkets and hypermarkets throughout the country by Ibérica de Patatas. The product can be found on the shelves until the beginning of June.
The late start of the Ibérica de Patatas’s campaign is due to heavy rains that have affected the growing areas and delayed harvesting, according to Agronoticias. In return, this year's product is presented with a larger caliber, with a total amount expected to be marketed of around 500 tons.
Until a few years ago it was very difficult to acquire this variety in the large distribution, since it is a very fresh product and with a shorter life span than other types of potato. Ibérica de Patatas decided to bring the Patata Nueva de Malaga for the first time to the shelves in 2008, thanks to its know-how and the necessary infrastructure that guarantees the distribution of this variety in optimal conditions of quality and presentation to the public, as it is a very fresh and delicate potato.
The initiative of Ibérica de Patatas to bring the Patata Nueva de Malaga has also contributed to promoting the cultivation of this variety in the area. Ibérica de Patatas sells the seed to farmers in the province. Since Ibérica introduced this product in retail 14 years ago, marketing has increased by 30%.
The new potato is easily identified: when touched, the skin rises with little resistance, and, when fried, its color is less yellow and its texture is more crunchy. Rich in carbohydrates, and of great importance in our daily diet, nutrition experts recommend its daily consumption, along with vegetables, in salads, legumes, and purees.
Ibérica de Patatas is one of the leading companies in Spain in the commercialization of consumer potatoes, with sales that in 2021 reached 135,000 tons.
