This year, Lidl has increased its acquisitions of Spanish spuds by 15%, attaining a total of 27,900 tons, which is a new record figure for the supermarket chain.

According to a recent statement, Lidl continues to guarantee the presence of potatoes of national origin throughout the year in its more than 630 stores in Spain.

Right now, Lidl collaborates with suppliers from autonomous communities such as the Region of Murcia, Andalusia, or Castilla y León for their national potato purchases.

“Our commitment to the potato of national origin is a new example of Lidl's firm commitment to the country's agri-food sector, whose sustainability and development we are increasingly promoting through our purchases,” explained the General Director of Purchasing of Lidl Spain, Miguel Paradela, cited by Europa Press.

Depending on the time of year, Lidl offers multiple varieties of Spanish potatoes on its shelves.

“The quality of our production is controlled from the purchase of the best-certified seeds to the collection, for that reason, we are committed to the cultivation of different varieties according to the production area, which allows us to have a continuous and quality supply throughout the year,” Paradela concluded.

In 2020, Lidl bought more than 1.6m tons of fruit and vegetables in Spain, exporting 84% to about 30 countries.
