US Retail Records Growth for Potatoes in August

USA total potato retail performance recorded growth in August 2017, according to Total Store Monthly Potato Report August 2017, by Potatoes USA.
The dollars growth in the category Fresh Potatoes was mainly driven by “other” (+41.3%), “yellow” (+11.0%) and “red” (+4.1%) potatoes. The yellow potatoes drove the majority of the volume growth, comparing to the same period a year ago. Frozen potatoes growth was majorly driven by Tarter Tots, in both dollars and volume sales.
The increased sales in Deli Potatoes is mainly from Potato Salad which holds the highest share. All types of dehydrated potatoes declined dollars vs. the same period a year ago, except for Mashed, Other and Scalloped Potatoes. The largest increases came from Scalloped Potato (+7.2% in dollars and +10.9% in volume), despite the decline of the category Refrigerated Potatoes The top two contributing segments in this category are Mashed Potatoes and Shredded Hash Browns.
Regarding “The fresh monthly potato report August 2017”, pounds and price per pound increased versus a year ago. Yellow, other and red potatoes drove majority of the dollars growth in Fresh Potato. Bag segment was mainly responsible for the dollars decline of Russet, White and Purple/Blue Potatoes. Both Bag and Bulk segments drove the overall growth of Yellow, Other and Fingerling Potatoes. Other Potatoes displayed the highest growth in dollars while Fingerling Potatoes in pounds.
