The Potato Remains the Top Vegetable of Choice in Latvia

Latvian supermarket chain Maxima has recently revealed that the most popular vegetable in the country remains the potato, writes LSM.LV.
The top 5 fruit and vegetable ranking is based on the sales in the chain’s stores. The potato is followed by onions, carrots, tomatoes and Latvian country cucumbers aka gherkins.
Meanwhile, the most popular fruit is said to be the banana, followed by apples, mandarins, oranges and watermelons.
According to the report, Latvians are buying an increasing amount of fresh vegetables and fruit. In the second quarter of the year, the amount sold was 9% more than last year. Furthermore, the demand for local produce is increasing. Demand has grown by 10% for fruit, vegetables, and berries grown in Latvia, which have a reduced VAT rate.
The source does not shed light on the prices of potatoes, but across Europe, prices have been increasing due to unfavorable weather conditions. According to El Periodico, low production in Europe has caused the export figures to plummet in the main producing countries (France, the Netherlands, Germany). This has caused the price of potatoes to almost double.
