The potato industry generates more than $1 billion for the Canadian province of P.E.I., says an economic impact study released Friday.
The study, put out by the P.E.I. Potato Board, also shows the sector creates more than $245 million in household income and 8,283 jobs, which represents 12.1 per cent of total employment in the province, reported CBC News.
It also represents more than 10.8 per cent of the provincial gross domestic product.
The study was designed to show government and Islanders the importance of the industry and of the need for continued investment. It looks at the direct and spinoff effects.
