New Potato Processing Plant to Be Built in Kenya

A new potato and vegetable processing plant will be built soon in Ol Kalou, Kenya, a recent report from The Star informs.

The facility will be the product of a collaboration between the Department of Correctional Services and the Nyandarua country government. The aim is to mitigate post-harvest losses which are a major challenge in potato production and marketing.

According to the report, this is a follow-up of the potato seed multiplication center launched at the NYS Tumaini barracks last month. The new construction project will take up an area of 30 acres. Ten acres belong to the prison department and the rest to the Nyandarua county government.

Deputy Governor of Nyandarua Cecilia Mbuthia said the region reached out to the national government for support due to the importance of potatoes as a source of livelihood for locals and the tubers’ contributions to the national food security.

Nyandarua is said to have allocated a total of SH382m (USD3.79) this year for the project.
