New German Cabinet Offers Opportunity for Potato Sector Reform, Says DKHV

The German Potato Trade Association (Deutscher Kartoffelhandelsverband e.V., DKHV) has responded positively to the formation of Germany’s new federal cabinet, expressing hope that the incoming government will provide fresh momentum for long-needed reforms in agriculture, digital infrastructure, and regulatory relief.
In a statement issued from its Berlin headquarters, the DKHV emphasized the importance of cross-departmental collaboration and pragmatic policymaking to ensure the long-term competitiveness and sustainability of Germany’s potato industry.
Administrative Burdens Remain a Major Concern
According to a recent internal survey conducted among DKHV members, more than 75% of businesses cited excessive bureaucracy as the greatest challenge facing the sector. The association pointed to long approval timelines, overlapping documentation requirements, inconsistent regulatory frameworks across national and EU levels, and underdeveloped digital reporting systems as core issues stifling innovation and operational efficiency.
“The current structures are stifling innovation and growth,” said DKHV Managing Director Dr. Sebastian Schwarz. “We need streamlined regulations, uniform standards, and a digitized administrative system that ensures planning reliability and efficiency.”
The call for digital transformation comes at a time when the broader agricultural sector in Germany is increasingly under pressure to modernize, streamline compliance, and remain globally competitive.
A New Political Opportunity for Structural Reform
The DKHV sees the change in political leadership as an opportunity to pursue a more business-oriented and sector-specific policy agenda. The association welcomes the appointments within key ministries relevant to agriculture, digital affairs, and trade, and has committed to engaging in “constructive and solution-oriented dialogue” with the new cabinet.
“Personnel decisions in the relevant ministries provide a solid foundation for productive collaboration,” Schwarz added. “We are ready to work together on viable solutions that strengthen the German potato industry and position it for long-term success.”
As Germany's potato trade continues to play a critical role in the European food supply chain, the DKHV is pushing for a more agile regulatory environment that can support innovation, expand digital infrastructure, and align national policies with EU agricultural strategies. The association represents a wide network of growers, traders, and processors who are seeking practical, industry-informed approaches to policy development.
