French Potato Producers Criticize the Low Price of Supermarket Potatoes

French potato producers are criticizing the fact that the French retailer Intermarché distributes advertising flyers with potatoes sold at 11 Euro cents per kilogram.

They said they are “shocked and angry” for the undervalued price for potatoes in the chain.

“Is this a "Producers & Traders" price? This may be the slogan of the Intermarché brand, but at that price, producers cannot sustain themselves from their work,” according to a press release from French Association of Potato Producers - Union Nationale des Producteurs de Pommes de Terre (UNPT).

The Union is questioning where the actual value-added component exists in this sector and if it is equitably distributed, especially taking into the account the high price fluctuation in stores.

They also add that producers should discuss with consumer associations rather than to co-sign with the large and medium-sized retailers.
